Irish-language Film "Kneecap" Secures Global Screening in Major Deal

The Irish-language film "Kneecap," delving into the origin story of the vibrant and groundbreaking Belfast rap trio of the same name, has scored a major win with its acquisition by Sony Pictures Classics for release in North America and other key global markets.

Trevor Birney, the producer of Kneecap, shared the exciting news with RTÉ, expressing his delight in the film's newfound reach. He highlighted that Sony Pictures Classics, known for backing beloved films over the past two decades, plans to showcase "Kneecap" in 200 cinemas across America this summer, extending its reach worldwide.

Birney emphasized the significance of this achievement, not only for Kneecap but also for Irish film and the tight-knit community of producers in Belfast. Drawing attention to previous successes like "Game of Thrones" and "Derry Girls," he underscored the importance of indigenous film production and the collaborative efforts of local crews in creating independent cinema.

The film's premiere took place at the Sundance Film Festival in Utah, marking a historic moment as the first Irish-language film to screen at the festival. Additionally, Kneecap became the first non-US film ever selected for the NEXT section of the festival, known for showcasing innovative and forward-thinking storytelling.

The Sundance audience enthusiastically received the film, offering a round of applause and raucous laughter throughout the screening. Writer/director Rich Peppiatt and the stars of the film, including Kneecap's Mo Chara, Móglaí Bap, and DJ Próvaí, were in attendance, along with Simone Kirby, Jessica Reynolds, Fionnuala Flaherty, and Michael Fassbender.

Set in West Belfast in 2019, "Kneecap" narrates the formation of the group and its transformative impact on Irish music.

Expressing his journey with the film, writer-director Peppiatt shared, "When I first set out to make a film in a language I didn't speak, set in a place I'm not from, little could I have imagined four years later we would be introducing Kneecap the movie to the world at the Mecca of Independent cinema."

Founded in 1978, the Sundance Film Festival stands as the foremost platform for independent films globally. Notable Irish films, including "Brooklyn," "The Lobster," "Sing Street," and "The Hole in the Ground," have previously graced the festival.

Produced by Belfast's Fine Point Films, Dublin's Wildcard Distribution, and London's Mother Tongues Films, "Kneecap" received support from various organizations, including Northern Ireland Screen, the Irish Language Broadcast Fund, Fís Éireann/Screen Ireland, Coimisiún na Meán, and TG4.

Anticipation surrounds the film's release in Irish cinemas via Wildcard Distribution in 2024, coinciding with the debut album from Kneecap. The Sundance Film Festival continues until January 28, 2024, in Park City and Salt Lake City, Utah.
