Exploring Valentine’s Day Celebrations Across the Globe

Love is in the air with Valentine's Day just around the corner, and isn't a little romance just the pick-me-up we all need? Ever wondered how this special day is celebrated worldwide? Let's take a journey around the globe to explore some unique Valentine's Day traditions.

Wales, UK

Known for its passion, Wales celebrates love on January 25th, known as St Dwynwen’s Day. Couples often exchange intricately carved wooden spoons, called lovespoons, a tradition that dates back to the 16th century.

Valencia, Spain

In Valencia, Spain, the most romantic day falls on October 9th, the Day of Saint Dionysius, the patron saint of love. Festivals and parades fill the streets, and men traditionally offer their partners Mocadora, marzipan figurines, as tokens of love.

Miao, South West China

During the Sister’s Meal Festival in South West China, women cook vibrant rice dishes wrapped in silk and offer them to serenading suitors. The fate of the relationship is determined by what's found in the rice – two chopsticks symbolize love, while a clove of garlic means the end of romance.

South Korea

In South Korea, love is celebrated not just in February but on the 14th of every month. Each month has its own special day, such as Rose Day in May, Kiss Day in June, Hug Day in December, and Black Day in April, where singletons gather to enjoy black noodles.

South Africa

Inspired by the ancient Roman festival of Lupercalia, young South African women pin the names of their crushes to their sleeves for all to see, taking a bold approach to declare their affections.

Romania

On the 24th of February, Romania celebrates Dragobete, known as ‘The day the birds are betrothed,’ blending aspects of Valentine’s Day and a celebration of Spring. Activities include picking flowers in the forest and washing faces in snow for health and happiness.

The Philippines

In the Philippines, Valentine’s Day is a popular occasion for mass weddings, where hundreds or even thousands of couples tie the knot simultaneously. These grand events are often sponsored by the government as a public service.

Japan

While most countries pamper women on Valentine’s Day, Japan takes a different approach. Men are the recipients of gifts, and it's not until March 14th, White Day, that they have the chance to reciprocate.

Ghana

Since 2007, February 14th has been celebrated as National Chocolate Day in Ghana, aiming to boost tourism in one of the world’s largest cocoa-producing countries. The day features special chocolate-themed menus, exhibitions, and talks.

St Valentin, France

Between February 12th and 14th, the aptly named ‘Village of Love’ transforms into a romantic haven in France. Picture houses adorned with roses, trees covered in love notes, numerous marriage proposals, and the opportunity to plant your own lovers’ tree.

So, whether it's wooden spoons in Wales, marzipan in Spain, or love notes in France, love knows no bounds when it comes to celebrating Valentine's Day across the world.
