Dementia, characterized by a gradual decline in brain function and memory loss, is a concerning syndrome. It impacts not only memory but also alters a person's thinking, speaking, emotions, and behavior. While factors like age and ethnicity contribute to the risk of dementia, certain lifestyle choices may play a role, offering an opportunity for prevention.
Health expert Dr. Michael Mosley explores the potential benefits of green tea in reducing the risk of dementia in his podcast, Just One Thing. According to him, the polyphenols in green tea offer additional health advantages, such as enhanced fat burning during exercise, mood elevation, and a lowered risk of heart disease and dementia.
Dr. Mosley consulted Dr. Edward Okello from the Human Nutrition Research Centre at the University of Newcastle to delve into the impact of green tea on brain health. Dr. Okello explained that Acetylcholine, crucial for neurotransmission in the brain, tends to decline with age, accelerating further in diseases like Alzheimer's.
Green tea, rich in flavonoids like epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), plays a role in maintaining brain health. EGCG has the potential to increase Acetylcholine levels, thereby improving neurotransmission and cognitive function. Dr. Okello emphasized that green tea might also help prevent or delay the accumulation of amyloid in the brain, a known risk factor for dementia.
To harness the benefits of green tea, Dr. Okello recommended a minimum of three cups per day, preferably using loose leaves. Each cup should range between 200ml to 250ml, with a steeping time of approximately three minutes. Reusing the leaves until they lose their flavor ensures optimal benefits from this herbal drink.
